Parkinson
At Aerofit patients with Parkinson's disease can join the group training coached by physiotherapist Pauline Baars.
People with Parkinson's disease have a reduced ‘automatic pilot'.
People with Parkinson's disease have less dopamine in their brains than healthy people. Dopamine is responsible for the motor system, the movement that you (un)consciously make. Less dopamine means, among other things, movement can be frozen and stiff. These people often move slowly and experience a lot of muscle stiffness. Also it can sometimes go very well and a couple of minutes later they are ‘totally finished'. The position and often also the facial expression freezes, and moving requires more effort. Some people with Parkinson's disease also experience a tremor when at rest; they start to shake spontaneously, for example with their hands. You cannot stop this, and that is rather awkward. The shaking stops when you sleep.
Parkinson's disease is an incurable and progressive disorder. With medicines you can suppress some complaints, but not heal them. The medicinal adjustment is very important and very sensitive.
People with Parkinson's disease profit from moving in groups. In that way they learn how they can move well and safely, what they must do when they fall down, and they receive tips and support from their partners in misfortune. As a result of this they become less isolated. Complaints of Parkinson's disease often become manifest between age 50 and 60, and occur in 1 in 50 persons. It therefore occurs more often than you would think! People with Parkinson's disease are just like you and me - they just need to think about every movement.
The Parkinson movement group takes place every Thursday between 11:00 and 12:00 and is coached by Pauline Baars, physiotherapist. For the partner of a patient with Parkinson's disease it would be advisable as well to join (and have a look) at what happens during such a group lesson, as well as to talk with other partners of Parkinson patients about their experiences. The group convalescence is covered by insurance.
